Planning ahead when it comes to giving a presentation is crucial. Nothing is worse than last minute surprises!
Preparation and Planning Ahead
Here are some basic presentation tips that I’ve collected from seasoned leaders and my own experience as a speaker and trainer.
Check the stage background color
Whenever possible, check on the background color of the stage before the event. Be sure you won’t blend into the background. If the background does not work ask if there is a screen or other backdrop that can be used during your presentation.
Reduce stress
Never wait to the last minute to select an outfit only to discover it doesn’t fit. Now what?!
Always try on the outfit, complete with accessories, a week before to make sure it is comfortable, it still fits, and is clean. Go the extra mile—have someone take a photo of you from three different angles: front, back and side. This will give you an objective view of what you look like in the outfit, and you’ll know how others will see you.
Comfort is Key
If you will be moving around, select a garment that provides freedom of movement without pulling, gapping or excessively wrinkling. Consider how your outfit will accommodate your range of motion on stage. If you have to reach, point, twist or walk briskly, take your clothes for a test drive before your presentation to see how they move with you.
Hand-held or clip-on microphone?
If you are using PowerPoint or need your hands free, opt for a clip-on (lavalier microphone). Be sure your outfit has a lapel or neckline that can accommodate the clip, and a place to attach the microphone pack, like a belt or waistband. If you want to get comments from audience members or other presenters, consider using a hand-held.
To keep the energy at a good level
Eat a meal of light protein with vegetables one hour prior to when you are to give a presentation. Go light on the caffeine.
No ice water please
Ice water constricts the vocal cords, which can make you feel, and sound, strained. Drink only room temperature water or bring your own bottle water.
Whether you are receiving an award or presenting a program you are doing public speaking. This is one of the best ways to promote yourself as a successful leader. By following these suggestions you can feel confident that your visual presence will not detract from your message.
