Karen Anderson Peters, M.A.

“Everything in business is personal, even if it doesn’t seem that way.”

Karen Anderson Peters Verbal PresenceThe most significant moments in business or in our personal lives happen when we move from mere conversation or informational transactions to true engagement. This distinction is vital, and it is where we find meaning, purpose and commitment. My purpose is to support leadership development through such communication.

My starting point is a simple one: to help prospective leaders identify their own communication style and that of others, and to use listening as an insightful companion. Such a process provides “entry points” that will deepen conversations and discussions. Building from there, we begin to understand the more complex dynamics of how we are able to use our own style effectively to connect with others, and to recognize when we revert to our particular “control panels,” inhibiting progress.

Professional Experience
I learned my craft in an extensive career which began when I was offered an opportunity to creatively adapt my Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology to the business arena. In the 80’s, I became the first full-time employee and company spokesperson at Gymboree Corp., integral to the growth of a start-up moving into an international play center franchise and a chain of retail clothing stores. Then, as Vice President of Communications and Licensing, I was responsible for opening new markets, creating an extensive presence with placements and appearances in international and local media, designing play equipment, developing media training, and producing videos.

My next venture was at Supercuts, Inc., creating the company’s first broad-gauged communications program, developing a media presence nationally, and spearheading recruitment of stylists.

From there, I formed my own consultancy in communications and marketing, working with a variety of clients, including seven years with Cadillac, conducting hundreds of focus groups as part of the largest research study in the U.S. auto industry. Concurrently, I developed and led “Ladies Who Launch,” a leadership development group for entrepreneurial women to help them identify and realize their potential in business.

All along, I’ve worked individually with executives, academics, and leaders in both interpersonal communications and presentational skills. Perhaps more importantly, I’ve applied what I’ve learned in my own family, finding out that authenticity, awareness and skill combine to create the most creative and satisfying relationships.

Clients and Extra-curricular Activities
My career seemed predetermined. My very first job was national spokesperson for Ralston-Purina, appearing multiple times on “The Tonight Show” and on national and regional media. I loved that experience and continued to be active in radio and television. This media experience allows me to coach others in the differences that cameras and recorders require. I hosted/co-produced “Lightworks” on KRON-TV-NBC in San Francisco for 25 years, and co-hosted/produced “Anderson & Clinton” on both KRCB-TV (PBS) and KKHI Radio.

Parallel to my career, I’ve been actively involved in community, church and non-profit programs, contributing expertise in communications, media, education, and organizational effectiveness.

The Verbal Presence Module of the Leadership Presence Program is the synthesis of my personal journey and professional work in learning about the essential need for leaders to engage verbally to move ideas, vision, and purpose forward.
